Shopify Blogging for Beginners: A Simple Guide

Got your Shopify store all set up? Your products are looking great, but you keep hearing the same advice: "You should start a blog." It can feel like just one more task on an already long to-do list.

But here's the thing: creating a blog is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to bring people to your site. You don't need to be a professional writer, either. Let's dive into why blogging is so important and how you can get started today.

Why Blog on Your Shopify Store?

It's a fair question. Your main goal is to sell products, so how does a blog help? In more ways than you might think.

  • It helps Google find you. Every blog post you write gives Google another page to index. This means more chances for potential customers to find you when they search for solutions your products provide.
  • It builds trust. Writing helpful articles that solve problems shows you're an expert in your field. People buy from brands they know and trust.
  • It answers customer questions. Think about common questions like, "How do I clean this?" or "Which one is right for me?" You can turn these answers into blog posts, saving you time and helping customers feel more confident in their purchases.
  • It gives you content to share. Running out of ideas for Instagram or Facebook? Share your latest blog post. It’s far more engaging than just another product picture.

How to Create a Blog Post in Shopify

Let's get practical. Shopify has a built-in blogging tool that is very easy to use. Here’s how to find it:

  1. Log into your Shopify admin panel.
  2. On the left-side menu, find "Sales Channels" and click on Online Store.
  3. In the drop-down menu that appears, click on Blog Posts.
  4. At the top right, click the green Add blog post button.

Now you're in the blog post editor. It might look a bit busy, but you only need to focus on a few key areas.

Key Fields in the Editor

  • Title: This is your headline. It should be clear and compelling. "A Guide to Choosing the Right Hiking Boots" is much better than "My New Post."
  • Content: This is the main body of your article. The simple text editor allows you to write, add headings, make text bold, and insert images or links. Just start writing!
  • Excerpt: This is a short summary of your post that often appears on your main blog page. If you leave it blank, Shopify will pull the first few sentences of your article. It's better to write a custom one to entice readers.
  • Featured Image: This is the main "cover photo" for your post. It appears at the top of your article and on your blog's homepage. Always use one to make your post visually appealing.
  • Tags: Tags are like keywords that help you organize your content. For a post about hiking boots, good tags might be "hiking," "footwear," and "outdoor gear." This makes it easier for visitors to find related posts on your site.
  • Search engine listing preview: At the bottom of the page, you'll find the SEO section. Here, you can write a custom page title and meta description. This is what people see when your post appears in Google search results, so spend a little time crafting something that stands out.

When you're finished, set the post's visibility to Visible and click Save. That's it! You've published your first blog post.

Some Tips for Writing Good Posts

Knowing how to publish is one thing; knowing what to publish is another. Don't overthink it. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Start with what you know. What are the top five questions your customers ask? Write a blog post that answers each one. Boom—you have your first five post ideas.
  • Think about problems your product solves. If you sell kitchen organizers, write an article like "5 Simple Ways to Declutter Your Kitchen Counters." You can naturally mention your products as part of the solution.
  • Make it easy to read. No one likes huge blocks of text. Use short paragraphs, add headings to break up sections, and use bulleted or numbered lists to make information easy to scan.
  • Add your own photos. If you're writing a guide on how to use your product, take some quick photos with your phone showing the steps. Authentic images make a big difference.

Is Shopify's Blog Good Enough?

You might read that Shopify's blog is too basic compared to a platform like WordPress. While it's true that it lacks some advanced features, the reality is that for the vast majority of e-commerce stores, it is more than good enough.

Your blog's main purpose is to support sales by driving traffic and building trust. Shopify's simple, built-in tool does that perfectly without requiring you to spend extra money or learn a complicated new system. If you eventually decide you need more features, the Shopify App Store has apps that can add functionality like related posts or advanced comment systems.

The most important thing is to just get started. Write one post, then another. You'll quickly see what a powerful impact it can have on your business.
